Lucena (Cena) Whipple Bessolo

Lucena (Cena) Whipple Bessolo passed away peacefully at home in Tiburon, CA, after a short illness, on November 9, 2017.

Cena was born in Viroqua, WI, on September 12, 1939, to Inman and Irma (Wiese) Whipple. She grew up in Stevens Point, WI, and Edison, NJ, and graduated from Metuchen (NJ) High School. Cena earned her nursing degree at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, where she also met and married her husband, Rodney Bessolo.

After Rod completed medical school at Marquette, he and Cena, with their young son Jim, moved first to Los Angeles, where their son Randy was born, then to San Francisco where daughter Becky was born. In 1970, the family moved into the house they built in their beloved Tiburon Hills neighborhood.

During Cena's 78 years of life, she bestowed upon her family and many friends gifts of beauty, kindness and love. An avid gardener, baker, genealogist, and purveyor of good taste, she had many talents with which to express her love. A life-long learner and aficionado of photography, history and art, some of her fondest days were those spent on pilgrimage with her husband along thousands of miles of the Camino de Santiago in France and Spain. Together, Rod and Cena created lasting memories lovingly documented with Cena's photos and Rod's journals, which they found great joy re-reading during her last days of life.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Rod Bessolo, son Jim (Nicole Perry) Bessolo and their children James (Jasmine Miller), Micah, Nina and Daniel; son Randy (Kathleen Byrne) Bessolo and their son, George, and foster son, Joe Williams; daughter Becky (Paul) Daro and their daughters, Lucy and Emmy. She was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law and grandson Andrew Bessolo.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the St. Vincent's School for Boys, 1 St. Vincent Drive, San Rafael, 94903.
