Rolf Ursin Smith

Rolf Ursin-Smith passed away peacefully in his Belvedere home on Thursday, October 27, 2016, surrounded by his family. He was 86 years old.

Rolf was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on August 18, 1930. He grew up in nearby East Aurora before attending Middlesex, a college preparatory school in Concord, Mass., where he was a standout athlete on the men's varsity hockey team. He attended the Ohio State University where he met his wife, Janice. He received a bachelor of science degree in business administration and continued with graduate studies, receiving a master of arts degree in geography. He also served two years in the Army at Fort Knox, Ky.; Fort Smith, Ark.; and Fort Sam Houston, Texas, during the Korean War.

After his military service, he was hired by IBM, where he spent his entire professional career. He retired from IBM in 1982 after spending over 25 years in sales roles that took him from the East Coast to the West Coast as well as two years overseas in Sweden and The Netherlands.

In retirement, Rolf was very active, teaching courses at the College of Marin on the subject which was a lifelong passion: geology. He also served as a volunteer guide for WildCare in San Rafael, providing tours of Ring Mountain on the Tiburon Peninsula, where he was in his element, teaching others about geology and nature.

Rolf is survived by his wife of 63 years, Janice Ursin-Smith. He is also survived by his son Todd of Novato, daughter Kristen of Redwood City, son Scott of Pacific Palisades as well as six grandchildren.

The family requests that donations be made to WildCare, 76 Albert Park Lane, San Rafael, CA 94901 or at www.wildcarebayarea.org. Please reference "Rolf Ursin-Smith Memorial." The family plans a private memorial service at a later date.
