Michael Lester Burns

Michael Lester Burns, 73, of Tiburon, passed away after fighting a long illness on March 23, 2015 at home, surrounded by his family. Michael was the second of 12 children born in Rockford, Illinois to Grace Lester Burns and Robert Mackey Burns.

Michael is survived by his wife Sally of 45 years and his six children Missy Stines, Chris Burns, Mick Burns, Erin Burns, Jon Burns and his step-daughter Jennifer Eggemeyer; he had nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and he leaves behind his younger siblings, three sisters and seven brothers. Although known as an intelligent, perceptive and soft-spoken man, he had a sharp wit and he laughed easily and often at the absurdity of life.

In 1964 Michael enlisted in the Army and served in Europe and was placed in the S-2 Intelligence section. When he returned home Michael attended the University of Illinois and Sagamont State University. Michael and Sally married August 10, 1974.

Michael was a tireless advocate for the disenfranchised and oppressed and lent his time and talents to helps others in the capacity of a union organizer, shop steward, veteran's advocate, nonprofit board member, counselor, community organizer, legal researcher, policy wonk and scribe for those that came to him for help. He helped to write by-laws for the Hilarita Resident's Association and served as a Resident Board Member on the Hilarita-Tiburon Ecumenical Association for over ten years.

The family will hold a small, private memorial service for Michael to celebrate and share stories about his life.
