Daniel Frederickson, DDS
March 2, 1939 – October 28, 2015

Dr. Dan Frederickson, retired dentist, age 76, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2015, after living with diabetes for five decades. He spent his final days surrounded by the love of his wife Shirley Silvestri, family, friends and the phenomenal staff at the San Francisco VA Community Living Center.
Dan was born on March 2, 1939, to Esther (Olds) and George Frederickson. He and his older sister Gerda grew up in Glendale, CA, attending Glendale Union Academy, where Dan excelled in school and all sports, but especially as a golfer and downhill skier. He was a runner-up to Jack Nicklaus in the 1957 International Jaycee Junior Golf Tournament. He attended La Sierra College and the University of California, Riverside. In 1962, Dan married his college sweetheart, Mary Conlee. He graduated from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in 1964 and enlisted in the United States Air Force with a dental internship that took him to Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas, followed by three years in Hof, Germany as Chief of Dental Services. While in Germany, his first daughter, Ann, was born. In 1968, the family returned to Texas, where Dan earned a Master's degree in General Dentistry at the University of Texas. Dan was assigned to Travis AFB in California as Director of General Dentistry Residency and Chairman of the Department of Restorative Dentistry. Dan received an honorable discharge in 1971 with a permanent rank of Major. The family moved to Chicago, where Dan taught at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry, was Chairman of the Department of Dentistry at the Illinois Masonic Medical Center, and was a member of Northwestern University School of Dentistry Multidiscipline Graduate Seminar faculty, in addition to maintaining a small private practice. His second daughter, Heidi, was born in 1972. The Frederickson family moved to Libby, Montana, in 1975, where Dan had a popular private practice. Divorced from Mary in 1991, Dan sold the practice and moved to San Francisco in 1992 to teach at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry as an Associate Professor of Operative Dentistry. In 1997, Dan met Shirley Silvestri while picking up travel documents at her San Francisco travel agency. They married at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe in 1999. They resided in Tiburon and traveled the globe until complications from diabetes brought Dan to the San Francisco VA Community Living Center in 2013.
Throughout his professional career, Dr. Dan was renowned for his know-ledge, professionalism and enthusiasm. His innovative thinking impacted dentists across the world. Dan won the Student Body Award at UOP for teaching excellence in 1994 and 2000. He held memberships and leadership positions in multiple national dental organizations, including the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators, the American College of Dentists, and perhaps the most fun, the American Association of Dental Insultants.
A vibrant member of his communities, Dan made friends everywhere he went. He was a member of Rotary International in Libby and Tiburon, and the Kootenai Valley Shrine Club. Although Swedish, Dan was gifted with a lovely Irish tenor voice and sang with the Marin Men's Chorus as well as various barbershop quartets, choral groups and church choirs. He enjoyed acting as a docent at the Tiburon Railroad and Ferry Museum. He loved his patients, colleagues and making connections, but above all he loved his family.
Dan is survived by his wife, Shirley Silvestri of Tiburon, his daughters Ann Monkhouse (Scott) of Seattle and Heidi Fahland Frederickson of Boise; his three grandchildren, Aspen and Ian Monkhouse and Jacob Fahland; his sister Gerda Fish (Warren) of Walla Walla, WA; his former wife, Mary Frederickson of Seattle; Shirley's children, Russ and Beth SIlvestri of San Francisco and Laura and Jeff Partridge of Reno; and Shirley's grandchildren, Allie, Diana and Catherine Silvestri and Matthew, Nicholas and Katelyn Partridge.
A Memorial Service will be celebrated at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 3 Bayview Ave., Belvedere on Wednesday, November 11 at 1:00 pm with a reception immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dr. Dan to the American Diabetes Association (Diabetes.org), the Belvedere-Tiburon Landmarks Society (landmarkssociety.com), or the charity of your choice.
