John Allen Mathews

A life that inspired, influenced and touched many came to an end on July 20, 2016, with the passing of John Allen Mathews, 59, of Belvedere, CA. John's loving family surrounded him as his arduous, three-year fight against cancer ended.
He was born on October 13, 1956 in West Haven, CT, to the late William and Marie (Cleary) Mathews. He graduated from Providence College.
John started his professional career on the Chicago Board of Trade, an experience that led him to an exceptional career in Institutional Bond Sales. He worked in New York, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles and San Francisco. For the last ten years he has been a Financial Advisor for Wells Fargo.
John loved his family unconditionally and felt blessed to create a life for his family in Belvedere after they moved here in 1991. He embraced life fully and lived each day with compassion, love and adventure, and offered his intelligence, wit and leadership talents to a range of community services.
His love of and commitment to the community was evident in the many volunteer activities in which he was engaged. He served as president of the board of Matrix Parent Network and Resource Center, an organization to support families with special-needs children. He inspired many young people as a coach for many years in programs each of his four children were involved in including Special Olympics, Tiburon Soccer, Southern Marin Lacrosse, Tiburon Little League and Softball.
Living on the Belvedere Lagoon brought John special joy that he always wanted to share with friends. He served on the Belvedere Lagoon Property Owners Association board and was Commodore of the Belvedere Sailing Society. He was a member of the San Francisco Yacht Club, Tiburon Peninsula Club and St. Hilary Church.
One of his greatest joys was being the founder of the Night Train Swimming Team, which has brought swimmers together to challenge themselves while raising funds for organizations ranging from Lifehouse, Semper Fi, Foundation for Reed Schools, and a swim program for needy children in Marin. Night Train embodies John's life commitment to live life with purpose, gratitude and compassion while supporting each other and challenging ourselves. He was so appreciative of how his Night Train teammates have bolstered and encouraged him during the past three years.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Lisa Barry Mathews, his daughters Kathryn, Shealyn and Casey and his son, Jack. He was predeceased by his sister Patricia Mathews Campane of Fairfax, VA, and his brother William Mathews of West Haven, CT, and is survived by his sisters Margaret (Sandy) Carney of Naugatuck, CT; Kathi (Dave) Proctor of Reading, MA; sister-in-law Linda Mathews; his aunt, Margaret Cleary of Brooklyn, NY, and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Hilary Church at 10am on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, followed by a reception and remembrance at the San Francisco Yacht Club from noon to 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Night Train or Marin Ventures.
