Rupert Louvain Jernigan

Rupert Louvain Jernigan, of Corte Madera, died February 25th 2015 at approximately 1:30 AM. Rupert was born in 1922 in Kentucky and raised by his Grandparents in Tennessee. After one year at the University of Kentucky, Rupert enlisted in the U.S. Maritime Service as a Seaman Apprentice in 1940. Nominated to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, upon graduation he was commissioned as an Ensign in both the U.S. Naval Reserve and the U.S. Maritime Service. During WWII, he served in the Pacific Combat Theater both as a Cadet Midshipman and later as a Merchant Marine officer.

After WWII, he worked in the shipping industry and as an executive at Gump's department store. Getting his Real Estate Salesman's license, he started his long career in Marin County Real Estate in 1955. During most of that career, he was the owner and broker of Jernigan Associates of Tiburon. He retired in 1998.

He married Cynthia Marie Gerstle of San Francisco in 1944. In 1953, they adopted their daughter Laura Marie Jernigan. In 1957, their son Russell Lewis Jernigan was born. A long time resident of the village of Tiburon, he was active in the PTA of the Reed Union School District, Boy Scout Troop 48, the Tiburon Peninsula Club, and the Marin County Dog Training Club. Many will remember him walking his St. Bernards in The Reedlands. He was active in the campaign to incorporate Tiburon as a city.

He is survived by his daughter, Laura Jernigan of Napa, his son, Russell Jernigan of Round Rock, Texas, and his Grandson, Reid Jernigan.

A Memorial Service was held on Monday, March 2nd at St. Hilary Church, Tiburon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to a hospice organization or the charity of your choice.
