Oboes & Trumpets & Bassoons, Oh My!

Bring family, friends and neighbors to an entertaining Marin tradition and join Belvedere resident and trumpeter, William Smith, and the 74 other members of the ever-popular Las Gallinas Valley Sanitary District Non-Marching Band, affectionately known as “the sewer band,” in a Golden Anniversary Celebration at their 50th Annual Spring Concert. Conductor Benedetta Dalbesio leads the band in marches, show tunes, big band music, a bit of classical and some musical surprises guaranteed to put a song in everyone’s heart. Hymns & Spirituals & Folk Songs, Oh My!
Join acclaimed women’s chorus, Musae, in its fifth anniversary celebration concert, Grace: Songs of Hope and Wonder, featuring shape note and Shaker hymns, beloved African-American spirituals and moving folksongs from Scotland and Ireland. Since 2004, Musae’s dozen or so members have continued to offer accessible music for all ages while stretching the boundaries of traditional repertoire for women’s voices. Take the free 7:30 p.m. shuttle from the Boardwalk Shopping Center near Wells Fargo Bank to the 8 p.m. show on Wednesday, May 21. Tickets: $10-$20. Children 5 and under are free. Lions & Tigers & Bears, Oh, My!
Dress as your favorite Oz character and shuttle, hike or bike to see Dorothy, Toto and friends in The Mountain Play Association’s 2008 production, The Wizard of Oz, held, as always, in Mt. Tam’s magical outdoor amphitheater. Anticipated special effects feature an airplane flyover, hot air balloon and professionally trained terrier. Pre-performance events include puppet shows, face painting, teen a capella group ’Til Dawn and a costume contest for free tickets. The first show is at 1 p.m., Sunday, May 18.
