Belvedere filmmaker explores unconscious bias in documentary

When the 41st annual Mill Valley Film Festival opens Oct. 4, it will showcase 108 feature-length films from 46 nations — including the documentary “Bias,” Belvedere filmmaker Robin Hauser’s deep dive into unconscious bias and how it affects relationships, workplaces and more. The idea for her new film came while Hauser was on the road promoting “Code: Debugging the Gender Gap,” the 2015 documentary she made to expose the tech industry’s lack of diversity. As she traveled and talked, she kept hearing the phase “unconscious bias” as one possible explanation for why women weren’t pursuing education and careers in STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
