Media organizations say Tiburon’s new drone regulations go too far

Three state and national media-advocacy organizations are challenging the legality of Tiburon’s new ordinance prohibiting drones from flying near Reed Union School District campuses, local special events and emergency scenes, and capturing and recording images of them. Through its lawyer, the National Press Photographers Association — joined by the California News Publishers Association and California Broadcasters Association — sent a letter to the town of Tiburon July 31 arguing the Town Council went too far in reacting to an incident at Reed Elementary School in March. At the core of their argument, the organizations say the Federal Aviation Administration controls the airspace over Tiburon from the ground up. The organizations are also challenging the constitutional legality. The Ark has also registered its objections to the new laws.
