Belvedere businessman helped turn ‘Back to the Future’ car into a reality

The DeLorean sports car — with its stainless-steel skin and gull-wing doors — has become an icon of the early 1980s, canonized as the time machine in “Back to the Future.” But less well known is the story the Belvedere man who helped boost the DeLorean to its short-lived success. Longtime West Shore Road resident Walter Strycker started working with John DeLorean in 1977 and helped raise more than $200 million to kick-start production of the then-prototype sports car. Strycker also found a location for the company’s manufacturing plant in war-torn Northern Ireland, which earned him a spot as the company’s chief financial officer.
