All Del Mar7th-graders will take accelerated math class in 2023-’24

All seventh-graders at Del Mar Middle School will take accelerated math beginning in the 2023-2024 school year, a move educators say will establish a more equitable curriculum and provide all students additional opportunities to develop their skills.

The Reed Union School District board of trustees at its Jan. 18 meeting voted 4-1 to approve a plan from Del Mar Principal Brian Lynch and the school’s math department to have all students take what is currently known as Math 7C, a compacted class that in addition to the regular seventh-grade math curriculum covers additional units of eighth-grade math.

However, citing a desire to ensure the district has adequate time to prepare for and implement the change, the board tacked an extra year on to the rollout, which school staff had proposed for the coming fall.
