Belvedere lists 235 potential units in draft housing element

Belvedere’s draft housing element identifies some 235 potential new units across 20 sites, including secondary units at additional private homes, providing the city a big buffer over the 160 it must plan for over the next eight-year housing cycle.

Members of the City Council and Planning Commission reviewed the draft at a joint meeting Oct. 20, in which consultant Ande Flower of EMC Planning Group gave a brief overview and fielded questions from officials and members of the public.

More than half of the 235 units would come at Belvedere Land Co. properties, mostly through redevelopment of The Boardwalk Shopping Center and, according to a letter from the city by Belvedere Land representatives, by adding second stories or units over garages at existing properties. However, they noted the Boardwalk redevelopment would require rezoning, something city officials have said they hope to minimize.

The draft element is available for review at bueprintforbelvedere.com, where residents may also offer public comment, fill out a property-owner interest form to potentially offer a second unit sometime in the next eight years and sign up for email updates about the project.
