Belvedere sets sights on $30 million in seawall grants

The city of Belvedere is vying for $30 million in state and federal grants to fund its planned multimillion-dollar project to strengthen the city’s seawalls. The City Council unanimously approved a request by city staff to submit an application for a $10-million grant from the California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways, which offers funds for projects that tackle shoreline erosion. The parks division also considers requests for projects that construct or repair seawalls. If the city receives the erosion-control grant, it would have to match 50 percent of the amount — up to $5 million, depending on how much is awarded. At the end of December, the city also applied for a $20 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency under its Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program. The program is designed to support agencies with projects to mitigate natural hazards, such as sea-level rise and earthquakes.
