Collapse of school district transfer deal paves way for vote to redraw boundaries

A longstanding agreement that has allowed East Corte Madera students who live within Reed Union School District boundaries to instead attend their neighborhood Larkspur-Corte Madera district schools will not be renewed when it expires in June, with officials saying last week that months of negotiations had failed to produce a new deal that made financial sense for both sides.

The announcement was made at a Nov. 16 Larkspur district board meeting by Superintendent Brett Geithman and confirmed by Reed officials the following day. It came less than a week after a separate, controversial parent-led effort seeking to permanently move most of East Corte Madera out of the Reed district and into Larkspur-Corte Madera territory scored its first victory, advancing to a county committee that will now be tasked with ruling on the request. That committee has set two public hearings on the issue, one on Nov. 30 at The Cove School and one on Dec. 15 in the Del Mar Middle School gym.
