More than four-dozen works will be on display in “Colors in Art: Voices Soft and Loud,” a new exhibit that opens Jan. 18 at the Belvedere-Tiburon Library.
The show, which has an artists’ reception from 6 to 8 p.m. opening night, runs through March 14. It features 53 works from Bay Area artists in a variety of mediums and is a testament to the power of color in art.
“Artists are either boldly or quietly speaking their color language to you,” says Diane Green, co-chair of this exhibit. “We want viewers to not only respond to the colors on the walls but to notice their own reactions to the mix of hues.”
Among the artists with pieces in the exhibit is Tiburon’s Tom Purdy with his 16-inch-by-20-inch oil painting “Ship Leaving San Francisco Bay.”
The 56-year-old Purdy, who co-founded and operated Waypoint Pizza with his sister Melissa Purdy Feagin for 20 years before selling the business in 2017, has only been painting for a few years and has taken just a couple of lessons online. He says he decided to paint some oils for his 1-year-old daughter, Hadley, by copying works of his favorite artist, nouveau réalisme painter Wayne Thiebaud. A few years later, he took his 10-year-old niece to hear Thiebaud speak, and when questions were allowed, she asked, “Is it all right to copy someone else’s paintings?”
