Residents ponder ways to invigorate, even redesign, downtown Tiburon

Residents brainstormed ways to make downtown Tiburon more lively and pedestrian-friendly at a virtual forum aimed at helping shape the town’s long-term growth and development.

The April 27 workshop was hosted by O’Rourke and Associates, the consulting firm tasked with updating the town’s General Plan, designed to lay out the next 20 years of local policies on land use, housing, parks and open space, transportation and more.

The firm floated several ideas for invigorating downtown Tiburon, including replacing some buildings, vacant spaces and parking lots with higher-density, mixed-use buildings that would put more housing downtown above commercial spaces. Other ideas included redesigned streetscapes that make retail businesses and restaurants more inviting, more pedestrian-friendly ways of getting around, wider sidewalks to accommodate outdoor dining and gathering and reducing the lanes for vehicle traffic to make room for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, they said.
