Tiburon commission again seeks easier OK of larger second units

For the second time in a year, the Tiburon Planning Commission is pushing back against the Town Council in an effort to let homeowners build larger second units with only a simple checklist sign-off by planning staff.

Under the commission’s proposal, no scrutiny from the town’s Design Review Board would be needed for a two-plus-bedroom accessory dwelling unit of up to 1,200 square feet, an increase from 1,000 square feet, in an effort to make it easer for residents to provide affordable housing. The Dec. 8 vote was unanimous and will once again be forwarded to the Town Council for consideration in the new year.

“I do think that legislative intent is so critically important here,” Commissioner Erica Williams said at the meeting. “In my mind, the need for affordable housing … is really, really important.”
