Tiburon grants $51K each in pandemic funds to chamber, tourism agency

Tiburon is doling out more than $51,000 each to the local chamber of commerce and to tourism agency Destination Tiburon to help the organizations make up for lost hotel-tax revenue during the pandemic and ramp up their programs promoting local businesses and overnight stays.

The Town Council at its Sept. 21 teleconference meeting voted unanimously to allocate $51,848 to each agency out of the town’s $2.17-million share of federal coronavirus relief funding. The two agencies are funded in part by local taxes on Tiburon’s two hotels, The Lodge at Tiburon and Waters Edge, but hotel revenue plummeted amid coronavirus shutdowns and travel restrictions throughout 2020 and 2021.

However, in a 3-2 vote, the council rejected a separate request from Destination Tiburon for an additional grant of $207,474.
