County program offers Tiburon seniors a nutritious meal, chance to socialize

James Hardy grabs a couple metal lids off the food pans set up buffet-style inside The Hilarita’s computer learning center and heads outside for what has become his Friday noon ritual. He ceremoniously bangs the lids together like cymbals three times, the clanging echoing in the small outdoor area adjacent to the office of the Tiburon apartment complex. “Chow call,” he shouts, signaling the weekly “congregate meal” program is underway. The program, administered by the county of Marin, offers seniors age 60 and older the opportunity to socialize over a healthy lunch. The meals are served five days a week, rotating across seven sites throughout the county. There is a $3 suggested donation per meal, but no one is turned away for lack of funds.
