Legislators go to bat for Tiburon-Angel Island ferry operator

The California State Lands Commission has put the brakes on State Parks’ plans to put the Tiburon-Angel Island ferry service out to bid as two state legislators are going to bat for current operator Capt. Maggie McDonogh of the Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry Co. The Lands Commission says its lease of the pier, dock, moorings and other improvements at Angel Island’s Ayala Cove to State Parks prohibits commercial activities and bars State Parks from subleasing the structures or entering into third-party agreements — such as a long-term contract for a ferry-service provider — without the Lands Commission’s approval. Meanwhile. state Sen. Mike McGuire, D-Healdsburg, and Assemblyman Marc Levine, D-San Rafael, were on hand at a Sept. 17 press conference on McDonogh's behalf and have written a joint letter to State Parks calling the contract terms unfair.
