Soaring costs threaten to stall Strawberry community center


Estimated construction costs for the Strawberry Recreation District’s planned new community center have soared to nearly triple the district’s budget for the building, surprising district officials and threatening to stall the project’s progress. The district’s board of directors at its Nov. 13 meeting learned the district had received two bids for the project, a $4.7-million estimate from San Francisco-based UpCycle Builders and a $5.5-million estimate from Walnut Creek-based Bali Construction. Both are significantly higher than the $1.5 million -$1.8 million cost the board had expected.
