Challengers emerge in Belvedere council race

Updated: Aug 31, 2022

Two incumbents have filed to remain on the Belvedere City Council, though both could face challenges from newcomers seeking to unseat them in the November election.

Current Councilmember Peter Mark filed last week to run for one of two four-year council seats on the Nov. 8 ballot, while Mayor Sally Wilkinson filed to run for a shortened two-year seat.

Both races could be contested. For the four-year seats, challengers Jane Cooper and Brian Davis have pulled nomination papers, while former Parks, Open Spaces and Lanes Committee member Carolyn Lund has pulled papers to compete against Wilkinson for the interim term. None of the challengers had filed their paperwork by The Ark’s Aug. 8 press deadline.

Tiburon’s Town Council race is also shaping up to be a competitive one: incumbents Jack Ryan, Alice Fredericks and Jon Welner and challenger Isaac Nikfar all pulled papers last month but have yet to formally declare their candidacy.

The filing period for the November ballot — which also includes races for seats on the public school, fire, sanitation and recreation districts serving the Tiburon Peninsula — runs through Aug. 12, with an automatic extension to Aug. 17 only for challengers if an incumbent fails to file.

Filing for Tiburon’s council race will close this week if the three incumbents file, though Belvedere’s race will automatically extend.
