Tiburon, Belvedere lose appeals on housing mandates
Appeals filed by Belvedere and Tiburon over a state affordable-housing mandate have been denied, leaving the cities on the hook to plan for more than 800 new housing units in the next eight years.
The Association of Bay Area Governments has rejected both municipalities’ attempts to push back on the draft Regional Housing Needs Allocation, which breaks down the allotment of new housing that must be accommodated by each jurisdiction.
Under the draft, Tiburon is required to plan for 649 new housing units in its 2023-2031 housing cycle — about eight times higher than the 72 that were allocated in the previous eight-year cycle — while Belvedere would need to plan for 160 units, up from 16.
The allocations don’t require the cities to build the housing, only to identify potential building sites and rezone to allow for development.
