Adrian Laverne Askeland

Adrian Laverne Askeland passed away September 25, 2017, in his home in Arizona. He had been recovering from surgery.

Adrian was born in Morris, Ill., on November 4, 1935, to Adolf and Verna Askeland. He grew up in Rockford, Ill., and attended Rockford West High School and the University of Wisconsin, where he played varsity basketball and baseball. He married his classmate Julie Bowes Thayer after graduating from Wisconsin.

After serving in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for two years, he and Julie and young son Adrian moved to Southern California and then to the Bay Area, where he worked in mortgage banking and construction. In 1962, with second son Mark, moved into the house they had built in Tiburon. Their daughter, Elizabeth, was born in 1966.

Adrian coached a number of Little League teams — one memorable playoff took place at the baseball field at San Quentin with an actual broadcast. Spirited fans replayed it the next day.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and reading — a true history buff.

His later years were spent in Arizona with his wife Doris.

He is survived by his wife Doris; son Adrian and his wife, Lucrecia, and their children, Jennifer and Vanessa; son Mark and his wife, Angela, and their children Nicole, Monique, and Isabelle; daughter Elizabeth and her husband, Michael Canady, and their children, Christina and Bennett; sister Donna and her husband, Paul Nordvig, of Reno, Nev.; and brother Ronald and his wife, Jo Ellen, of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.

A private family gathering in his memory will be held.
