Champions, locals to take to the water for 17th Tiburon Mile

In 1999, Tiburon resident Bob Placak founded the Tiburon Mile, an open-water swim race from Angel Island to the beach between Sam’s Anchor Cafe and the Corinthian Yacht Club featuring Olympic and FINA World Open Water Swimming champions as well as Marin swimmers. The 1-nautical-mile race has been held each year since, with the exception of 2005, 2014 and 2017. The race returns this year on Aug. 19, when hundreds of spectators are expected to line Shoreline Park to cheer on the 400-500 athletes expected to take part. The event will also feature a live band and gourmet food for sale by 12 restaurants such as Sol Food, Milano Ristorante, Comforts and Guaymas. (Diane Smith photo)
