Artist’s paintings inspired by Dutch masters’ use of symbolism

When Linda Schroeter was 12 years old, one of her paintings was displayed by an art gallery owner in Schroeter’s South Australian town — and the piece sold for $50. Schroeter says she’s intrigued by the works of the Dutch masters of the 15th and 16th centuries, who manipulated light to create the sense of 3-D space. Several of her works will be on display in her upcoming art exhibit, “Symbolism and Narrative in Still Life,” on display Sept. 11-Oct. 4 at the Belvedere-Tiburon Library. An artist’s reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 11. At 1 p.m. the following Sunday, Sept. 16, Schroeter will give a free talk at the library about her paintings. (Diane Smith photo)
