Byron (Bill) William Kilgore M.D. was born on December 10, 1939 in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Byron Kilgore M.D. and Mary Margaret Strickler. After his mother’s death in 1951, he was part of a blended family including his siblings Barbara Harris, Diane Bottom, and Daniel Kilgore, and his stepmother Frances Amalie Pippereit’s children Douglas Stemshorn, Carol Catsam, and Laurence Kilgore.
Bill attended grade school in Indianapolis, and high school at Broad Ripple High School. He attended Wabash College, and completed his medical education at Indiana University, graduating in 1965. He met his wife, Linda, at the Indiana University Medical Center and married in Indiana, prior to moving to Anaheim, California, for his internship at Orange County General Hospital. After his internship, he was drafted into the Air Force and served as a captain delivering babies at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas.
Following his military service, Bill accepted a residency in psychiatry at McAuley Institute at Saint Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco. He was board certified in both child and adult psychiatry. On completion of his residency, he and his family moved to Tiburon, where they were active in the Tiburon Peninsula Club and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
Bill practiced psychiatry in San Francisco for 48 years before retiring in 2013. He was a warm-hearted and loving person with an engaging smile. He enjoyed reading, poetry, theatrer, and entertaining friends and family. He wrote poetry and prose and especially enjoyed the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon.
Byron William Kilgore MD died peacefully surrounded by his wife, children, and friends on April 9, 2019. He is survived by his wife, Linda Ann Kilgore, and their children, Margaret Ann Jessop, Kathleen Diane Kilgore, and Byron Benjamin Kilgore. His grandchildren are Hadley Colin Jessop, Calum Phillip William Jessop, Michael Byron Wilmer, Ann Elizabeth Kilgore and Lily Kate Kilgore.
His memorial service will be in the chapel on May 11, 2019, from 1:00-3:00 PM at Fernwood Cemetery, 301 Tennessee Valley Road, Mill Valley, CA 94941. In lieu of flowers please donate to hospicebythebay.org.
