Officials reject lighting plan central to Tiburon Peninsula Club tennis-program expansion

The Tiburon Peninsula Club has won the green light to build its new junior tennis center — but without the lighting that would allow lessons, and noise, to continue into the early evening, a detail that could sink the plans entirely. After several hearings and hours of public discussion, the Tiburon Planning Commission on May 8 voted 3-0 to approve the facility expansion, including a new entryway, restrooms and storage facilities, but to deny the club’s request to install 48 lights for the six existing courts across the street from the main clubhouse. Those lights would have been flipped on at dusk and shut off by a locked timer at 7:45 p.m. between Sept. 8 and April 14 each year, but residents have sent letters and attended hearings in droves, saying the additional light and noise would have a widespread negative impact on neighbors.
