Long-time taekwondo instructor takes a final bow after 27 years


Taekwondo instructor Alex Miller says one of the most rewarding aspects of his decades-long career has been seeing students carry the lessons they learn in his academy over to their everyday lives. Miller, who retired last week after 27 years teaching the Korean martial art at the Belvedere Community Center, says he trained thousands of local kids how to high-kick and punch — and helped them develop less tangible skills such as discipline, self-assurance and the ability to choose right over wrong. “Even if they don’t end up sticking with taekwondo, if they turn out to be good people because of what they learned, that’s what we want to see."
