New Morning demolition shines a light on piece of Tiburon history

A nostalgic piece of Tiburon history resurfaced during last month’s demolition of New Morning Cafe and Grass Shack in downtown Tiburon. Several locals were on hand to watch the big excavator’s metal claw tear away at the 1930s-era building at the northern corner of Tiburon Boulevard and Juanita Lane. When it was down, all that remained was the sidewalk — with a small plaque of wooden letters embedded into the concrete next to the cafe’s doorsill. Even with three letters missing, it was easy to make out the word: Skipper’s. The marker — which reportedly was cut out and will be given to the Belvedere-Tiburon Landmarks Society — had mostly escaped attention for decades. Skipper’s was a previous cafe that had also called the building home. (Elliot Karlan photo / For The Ark)
