Marie Nelson Feldman, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt died in her home, surrounded by family on May 2, a few days before her 100th birthday. As a longtime Belvedere resident, she was very involved in the planning and fundraising for the Belvedere-Tiburon Library. She and her late husband, Larry, were major donors and avid supporters of the library.

Born on May 9, 1920, in Boston, Massachusetts, Mrs. Feldman attended nursing school and was a proud veteran of WWII, serving throughout Europe on a hospital ship as a first lieutenant. She married Lawrence Feldman in 1947 and lived in Connecticut with their two daughters until moving to Belvedere in 1963.

While living in Belvedere, Marie enjoyed hiking, tennis and lagoon life. She was a gourmet cook and bread baker. She loved the Tahoe area and enjoyed cross-country skiing with family and friends. She was an accomplished knitter, seamstress, needlepointer and an enthusiast of many other crafts. She made so many beautiful embroidered Tamari balls that she was asked to display them at the Belvedere-Tiburon Library. Marie took an early stand to protect and preserve the Tiburon open space that continues to be enjoyed by locals. She continued to live in Tiburon and Belvedere until her death, except for a short move of 18 months to Connecticut in 2008.

After raising her children, Marie returned to nursing as California’s first Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, practicing at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco. While working in the field, she co-authored “The Handbook of Pediatric Primary Care,” and helped to set the standards for California nurse practitioners.

As they both approached 100, Marie and her recently deceased dear friend, Rita Fink, played a weekly game of dominos.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jane Cooper and Laurie Gregory, her grandchildren Jennifer Utley, Amy Wheeler and Scott Gregory, and her great-grandchildren Benjamin and Maxwell Utley, and Jesse and Adam Wheeler.

Donations in her memory may be sent to the Belvedere-Tiburon Library Foundation, 1501 Tiburon Blvd, Tiburon, CA 94920.
