Marjorie Moore
On August 2, 2020, Marjorie (Midge) Moore died at her Belvedere home. She was 97 years old. She was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1923 and moved to the West Coast with her family in 1929. She attended Lowell High School in San Francisco and the University of California at Berkeley and maintained lifelong friendships with the people she had known there, especially helping with reunion activities for Lowell and endlessly lamenting that there was no graduation ceremony at Cal “because of the war.”
Midge had been a resident of Belvedere since 1947, when she and her husband, John, built their first home on Bayview Avenue. She was involved in several community organizations. A longtime member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, she and John helped in the relocation of the parish to the present address on Bayview Avenue and she participated in the Altar Guild and other church projects. She was also a member of the Belvedere-Tiburon Landmarks Society, the San Francisco Yacht Club and as a young mother with a baby led a Girl Scout troop.
She worked at the Village Salvage Shop and helped to open the Belvedere Nursery School, where she taught. She also was hands-on in the Reed district schools when her three girls started there. She was an avid tennis and bridge player and took great joy in her book club. She was determined to keep her friends close, so she founded her “Needle Club,” whose members brought their needlework and a sandwich and gathered to laugh and talk. Later, her “Widows and Divorcees” club met on Thursdays for wine and conversation.
In her mid forties, she enrolled at Dominican University and obtained her teaching credential. She then taught in the Reed Union School District for 16 years and enjoyed knowing the families she met there. When she retired at age 60, she traveled the world with friends, honed her bridge skills, enjoyed her family and friends and continued to work in many community activities.
Midge will be missed by her three daughters, Kathleen Moore of Reno, Nevada, Nancy Moore of Santa Cruz, California, and Robin Moore of Tiburon, California; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and her dog Rita, who has moved in with Robin, as well as her many friends near and far. No services are planned at the moment due to Covid-19.
