Alexander Mazour

Alexander Mazour died peacefully on May 9, 2022 at his home in Belvedere, where he lived for 60 years.

Alex was born on April 3, 1934 in New York. He moved west to Reno when his mother, Josephine Lurie, married Anatole Mazour, a professor of Russian history at the University of Nevada. The family soon relocated to Stanford, where Professor Mazour taught for 30 years.

Alex graduated from Stanford in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering. He also began his successful business career by turning the Stanford Daily into a profitable organization through convincing parents to buy subscriptions.

Upon graduation, Alex took a job at Pan Am, then the world’s largest and most iconic international airline. There he met and married the late Rosemary Lowman, his wife of 55 years. The couple settled in Marin, first in Sausalito and ultimately in Belvedere, where they remained for the rest of their lives.

Alex moved from Pan Am to Merrill Lynch, working as a stockbroker, before leaving with friends to form the first of several successful financial management firms. He never lost his love of travel and he and Rosemary continued to travel often and widely after their Pan Am years. Indeed, Alex had planned a trip around the world when his illness intervened.

Alex took up rowing later in life and quickly became an avid rower and part owner and president of Marin Open Water Rowing Center in Sausalito. Alex loved the bay, and rowing, and his rowing friends became some of the dearest in his life.

Alex was a devoted husband and father, a loyal and generous friend, and inveterate jokester.

He leaves behind his son Michael, daughter Mari, grandchildren Corey and Alaric, and many dear and beloved friends from his rowing, business, and Belvedere communities. A celebration of his life is being planned.
