Bel Aire kids return to stage with ‘Frozen Jr.’
Bel Aire Elementary School students will take audiences on a magical adventure across Arendelle in the school’s upcoming production of “Frozen Jr.”
About 140 students across two casts — the Arendelle cast and the Magic cast — will perform the musical at 6:30 p.m. March 9-12 and 2:30 p.m. March 12-13 at the school, 277 Karen Way. It’s the first time in two years students will perform a play in front of a live audience. The 2020 production, “Peter Pan Jr.,” was abruptly canceled just before opening night as the coronavirus first began to spread rapidly across Marin and the U.S.; students were able to do one performance, which was live-streamed to audiences at home. The play was canceled entirely last year amid ongoing pandemic restrictions.
This year’s show, which is put on by the school’s Parent Teacher Association, has been adapted for younger performers from the 2018 Broadway musical, which itself is based on the computer-animated Disney film that became a smash hit upon its 2013 release in theaters. It grossed $1.2 billion at the box office and spawned a 2019 sequel, while the signature song from the original film — “Let It Go” — was the fifth-best selling song of 2014, snagging an Academy Award for best original song and a Grammy Award for best song written for visual media.
