Belvedere OKs $150K contribution to library’s expansion

Belvedere will commit up to $150,000 in taxpayer money to the ongoing Belvedere-Tiburon Library expansion project — though some city councilmembers said they took issue with library officials not following through on a promise to fund the entire project privately.


The council at its May 10 teleconference meeting voted 4-0-1, with Vice Mayor Sally Wilkinson abstaining, to allocate the money toward the expansion, contingent on Belvedere receiving its expected federal stimulus of about $396,000 under the American Rescue Plan. Though that money, intended for pandemic relief, is likely to be restricted in its uses, city officials have said they can use those funds to free up additional money in the city’s budget for the library project.
