Juneteenth fest will kick off packed weekend set for June 17-19

Live jazz, short speeches and family-friendly activities are on tap for Tiburon’s second annual Juneteenth festival, which will be held on June 17 and kick off a packed weekend of free events downtown, including the following day’s British heritage festival on Ark Row and annual Classic Car Show at Shoreline Park.

The weekend culminates on June 19, Father’s Day, with Belvedere’s first Concerts in the Park of the summer season at Belvedere Community Park.

The Juneteenth festival, which celebrates Black history and commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S., is organized by the town’s Diversity Inclusion Task Force and will run 4-7 p.m. on lower Main Street, which will be closed to cars.

In addition to short remarks from speakers, including a talk on the history of Juneteenth from task force member Anette Harris and a poetry reading by Councilmember Noah Griffin, there will be several exhibit tables with opportunities for locals to learn more about the event. The Belvedere-Tiburon Library will have a booth featuring Juneteenth-related books and literature for children and adults, while MV Free, the diversity and inclusion alliance of Mill Valley and Play Marin, a Marin City organization headed by activist Paul Austin, will also be on hand.
