Marin mulls early concepts for Tiburon Wye improvements

Freeway ramp upgrades, new bike lanes and an undercrossing leading to Strawberry Village are among the early ideas being floated to improve travel for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians near the Highway 101 interchange at Tiburon Boulevard and East Blithedale Avenue.

The Transportation Authority of Marin has teamed up with consulting firm Parametrix to identify potential operational and safety improvements for the interchange, known as the Tiburon Wye, as part of a larger study by the agency of 12 Highway 101 interchanges throughout Marin.

The local interchange is one of three that has been prioritized to move forward from the conceptual study to the project initiation phase, in which the transportation authority will work with Caltrans, which has jurisdiction over Tiburon Boulevard and the freeway interchange, and other local agencies to prepare what’s known as a project initiation document. That document, which refines the scope of the project and outlines what type of environmental reports might be needed, is the first step in Caltrans’ three-step project-development process, and the agency must approve the document before any major project can enter its queue.
