Marin to ease indoor mask rules this week

With the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic subsiding, Marin is easing indoor-masking mandates this week and has established a blueprint for lifting the local rules entirely as soon as early November.


Marin Public Health announced that starting Oct. 15, vaccinated people can take off their masks indoors in certain settings, including at gyms, in offices and at religious gatherings under strict requirements.


The new rules were announced Oct. 8, the day after Marin said it would fully drop local indoor-masking requirements for the vaccinated when:

  • The county reaches the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s yellow transmission tier for moderate community spread and remains there for three weeks.

  • Countywide hospitalizations are low and stable, in Willis’ judgment.

  • Either 80 percent of the total population is fully vaccinated or eight weeks have passed since a vaccine has been granted emergency-use authorization for kids 5-11.
