Pandemic, confusion contribute to off-season use of sanctuary waters

Conservationists at the Richardson Bay Audubon Center in Tiburon are urging residents to respect the boundaries of the bay’s wildlife sanctuary waters, which are closed to all motorized and non-motorized watercraft — including standup paddleboards — each year from Oct. 1 to March 31. Residents, however, say the boundaries are poorly defined. “Richardson Bay is vital habitat for wintering water birds as well as a beautiful place for everyone to recreate and enjoy all that nature has to offer,” Center Director Casey Arndt said. “In order to protect the migrating sea ducks that rely on undisturbed habitat for resting and foraging, Audubon encourages everyone to remain outside of the sanctuary boundary — which is marked by large buoys and signage.” (Image provided by the Richardson Bay Audubon Center)
