Student test scores dip amid pandemic

Standardized test scores in the Reed Union School District decreased slightly in both English and math last year amid pandemic-related learning disruptions — but the district’s students still significantly outperformed their peers across the county and state.


About 80 percent of Reed district students met or exceeded grade-level standards in English, 76 percent in math, according to the results released last week by the California Department of Education.

That’s down slightly from the 84 percent of students who met or exceeded English standards and the 79 percent who met or exceeded math standards in 2019, the last time the test was administered.


The exam, given annually to students in grades 3-8 and 11, was suspended in 2020 as the coronavirus shuttered school campuses across the state and forced millions of students into distance learning, and last year’s test was optional.
