Tiburon chamber envisions one-way Main Street, focus on mobility

A new initiative being developed by the Tiburon Peninsula Chamber of Commerce to prioritize pedestrians downtown envisions a one-way Main Street with raised crosswalks and a bike lane — but it doesn’t include regular street closures for the popular Friday Nights on Main or Slow Streets events, which chamber officials say are on hold indefinitely amid safety concerns about blocking emergency-vehicle access.

The concept, dubbed the “Tiburon Downtown Initiative” and presented to the Planning Commission at its April 27 meeting by chamber Executive Director DeAnn Biss, is aimed at making easy, sustainable changes to Main Street and the surrounding area that accommodate all mobility needs and enhance economic vitality.

The proposal is in the conceptual phase, and Biss said she just wanted to get it on the commission’s radar and noted the ideas could be incorporated into the town’s ongoing update of its general plan, which serves as a 20-year blueprint for growth and development.
