Tiburon council favors dropping The Cove, focusing on downtown for housing

Tiburon officials have nixed The Cove Shopping Center from a list of potential housing sites and have directed consultants to increase the density of housing that could be built downtown, including at The Boardwalk Shopping Center and a complex of Belvedere Land Co. properties on Beach Road and Juanita Lane.

In providing the direction to consultants at a special April 27 meeting, the Town Council also issued a call for more public engagement on the sites list and larger housing plan, warning residents that they need to be aware of the massive amount of high-density development that could be coming in the next few decades under what Mayor Jon Welner called “the biggest planning change in Tiburon in a generation.”

“Most people aren’t really aware of what the state is going to require,” he said. “It’s a sea change.”
