Tiburon council may ban plastic foodware

Tiburon is poised to ban the single-use plastic foodware that often accompanies take-out orders.

The Town Council at its May 18 meeting expressed support for outlawing plastic utensils and other foodware that is not reusable or biodegradable and asked staff to prepare an ordinance for a formal vote at a future meeting.

The draft ordinance could be on the council agenda as soon on June 15, but it’s more likely to to return to the council late summer, as the board often does not meet in July, said Tiburon Town Manager Greg Chanis.

Several cities in Marin, including San Anselmo, Fairfax and Sausalito, adopted their own ordinances banning the single-use plastics in 2019, but many others, including Tiburon, decided to wait until the county adopted a foodware ordinance that could be used as a local model, an approach recommended by the Marin Climate and Energy Partnership, according to a staff report prepared for council’s May 18 discussion.
