Tiburon launches campaign to recruit new police officers

The Tiburon Police Department is hiring for two new officers to complete its short-staffed squad, with Chief Ryan Monaghan pledging to try to recruit a diverse pool of applicants for the positions.

The job listing, posted on the town’s website Aug. 19, seeks officers already employed by another agency or candidates who have graduated from basic academy training for the roles, which come with an annual starting salary of $88,056-$107,040, with pension and health benefits and wage boosts for college degrees, longevity of service and second languages.

Monaghan said the department is not considering alternative staffing solutions being called for elsewhere around the nation or suggested by the Tiburon Diversity Inclusion Task Force, which generally call for reallocating some funding for sworn officers to employ trained mental-health or social workers to join in incident responses. However, Monaghan said in an interview that if someone with a psychology or counseling background were to apply, that candidate would probably “rise to the top of the heap.”
