Tiburon will fly rainbow flag for Pride Month

For the first time, Tiburon will fly the rainbow flag at town buildings throughout June for Pride Month.

The move, sought “to inspire equity, create alliances, celebrate diversity and establish safe environments in our schools and community” came after the Tiburon Town Council voted at its May 19 meeting to adopt a new flag policy and proclaim June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+ Pride Month.

June has been part of LGBTQ+ Pride traditions for more than 50 years. The first Pride parade, Christopher Street Liberation Day, was held June 28, 1970, in New York City on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. Christopher Street West was held on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles the same day, while San Francisco held its own march — roughly 30 people walking Polk Street for an event alternatively called the Gay Liberation March, Christopher Street West and Gay Freedom Day — the day before, as did Chicago.
