Belvedere joins Tiburon fire district in rejecting county wildfire agency, tax
Belvedere will not receive a potential influx of additional tax dollars to ramp up its wildfire-prevention efforts after city officials voted last week against participating in a new countywide fire agency — joining the Tiburon Fire Protection District as the only two jurisdictions in Marin to opt out so far. After more than an hour of questions and deliberation at its Oct. 14 meeting, the Belvedere City Council voted 4-1 to decline participation in the newly formed joint-powers authority, called the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority. The authority wants to levy a 10-cent-per-square-foot parcel tax on the March 3 ballot to fund the authority by raising some $21 million annually for comprehensive wildfire prevention and planning across Marin.
