Authorities investigate ‘swatting’ attempt in Tiburon

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a so-called “swatting” incident that targeted a Tiburon family earlier this month after a pair of prank calls in which a man claimed to have murdered his family at the local address. The dangerous hoax, whose name is derived from the militarized police SWAT units, intends to lure a heavy and aggressive emergency response to the victim’s home under the pretense of an extreme and immediate threat. Tiburon police spokeswoman Laurie Nilsen said it’s the first known swatting incident in town.
