Work to stabilize the Beach Road seawall is now underway, the start of a monthslong project engineers say is needed to keep the eroding wall from failing in a major earthquake and flooding hundreds of lagoon-area homes.
Pacific Gas and Electric Co. crews began relocating utilities in the roadway on July 17. That project is expected to run through July 29, with possible Saturday work July 25, before the main construction begins. Gordon N. Ball Construction Inc. of Walnut Creek is set to build from July 27 to Oct. 30 under a $3.51 million contract the City Council awarded in April. The work will install steel sheet piles reinforcing about 550 feet of seawall along Beach Road, between the Main Street and Peninsula Road intersections, part of a roughly $4.97 million project.
