Jules Fogarty’s first years in the workforce were defined by remote work. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 2020, not too long after the pandemic hit, and spent his early career working from home as a data analyst and program manager for nonprofits.

So Fogarty, 27, says he’s happy to now be working at his first in-office job behind the front desk at Belvedere City Hall. He was hired as the city’s administrative technician in April; his responsibilities include customer service, accounts payable and receivable, records management, permitting and support for human resources and public meetings.

“I’m really liking it here,” Fogarty says. “The city’s beautiful, the staff’s really, really nice.”

He says he’s enjoyed getting to know residents and learning the ins and outs of the small community.

“In a bigger city or at the state level or federal level, it’d just be much harder to make relationships with the constituents that you’re serving at the end of the day,” he says.
