Setting fires to prevent them

Smoke rises from Angel Island as California State Parks conducts prescribed vegetation burns Jan. 28. The burns, which occurred throughout last week, were designed to manage invasive species, reduce fuel loading and promote resilience of the park’s grasslands and oak woodlands. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District gave conditional approval for the operation. State Parks may conduct additional burns in February.
